Methane May Be Building Under Antarctic Ice
BALTIMORE — Microbes living under ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland could be churning out large quantities of the greenhouse gas methane, a new study suggests.
In recent years scientists have learned that liquid water lurks under much of Antarctica’s massive ice sheet, and so, they say, the potential microbial habitat in this watery world is [...]

Climate Change and Sea Level Rise – Crock of the week
In the book Mother Natures Super Salesman put it like this; Excerpt
“During the summer of 2005 we got started on breaking some records for melting of the Greenland ice sheet. Offering to destabilize large parts of the ice sheet on timescales measured in years or decades, not millennia. Just to emphasize the point,” said the [...]

Team Finds Subtropical Waters Flushing Through Greenland Fjord
Waters from warmer latitudes — or subtropical waters — are reaching Greenland’s glaciers, driving melting and likely triggering an acceleration of ice loss, reports a team of researchers led by Fiamma Straneo, a physical oceanographer from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).
“This is the first time we’ve seen waters this warm in any of the [...]

Greenland’s glaciers disappearing from the bottom up
Water warmed by climate change is taking giant bites out of the underbellies of Greenland’s glaciers. As much as 75 per cent of the ice lost by the glaciers is melted by ocean warmth.
“There’s an entrenched view in the public community that glaciers only lose ice when icebergs calve off,” says Eric Rignot at the University [...]

2030 is just around the corner.
We have 20/20 hindsight on the past of which it is said we can be wise. It is also said we more often wait to react after the event, rather than take actions to prevent an outcome; sometimes with dire consequences. We all now have 20/20 foresight on the future of the world as it [...]

Study forecasts 9m sea-level rise if temperatures meet 2C threshold
Hundreds of millions of people around the world would be affected as low low-lying coastal areas became inundated
Global sea levels could rise by up to 9m in the next few hundred years, even if the world manages to stabilise average temperatures to 2C above pre-industrial levels, according to a new study.
In this scenario, hundreds of [...]

Greenland Glaciers: Water Flowing Beneath Ice Plays More Complex Role
Scientists who study the melting of Greenland’s glaciers are discovering that water flowing beneath the ice plays a much more complex role than they previously imagined.
Researchers previously thought that meltwater simply lubricated ice against the bedrock, speeding the flow of glaciers out to sea.
Now, new studies have revealed that the effect of meltwater on acceleration [...]

Copenhagen police detain 900 in climate change rally
Police in the Danish capital Copenhagen say 900 protesters have been detained following a huge climate change rally.
The move came after youths threw bricks and smashed windows as more than 30,000 demonstrators marched to demand action at the UN climate change summit.
Similar marches have been held in cities around the world, calling for decisive action [...]

To really save the planet, stop going green
As President Obama heads to Copenhagen next week for global warming talks, there’s one simple step Americans back home can take to help out: Stop “going green.” Just stop it. No more compact fluorescent light bulbs. No more green wedding planning. No more organic toothpicks for holiday hors d’oeuvres.
December should be national Green-Free Month. Instead [...]
