Thank you Mickey – Bob Williamson Founder & Chair.

There’s no time like now to be an activist!

Eighty-one tons of mercury is emitted into the atmosphere each year as a result of electric power generation. Every square mile of ocean hosts 46,000 pieces of floating plastic.

Here it comes …

Every second, 10,000 gallons of gasoline are burned in the US. Each year, Americans use 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides.

Wait for it …

Every two seconds, a human being starves to death. Every 46 seconds, a woman is raped in America. Every day, 29,158 children under the age of five die from preventable causes – every single day.

We’re almost there …

Ninety percent of the large fish in the ocean and 80 percent of the world’s forests are gone. Each day, 200,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed, over 100 plant and animal species go extinct, and 13 million tons of toxic chemicals released across the globe.

What an amazing time to be an activist …

No, I’m not being cynical. I’m simply listening to the sound of opportunity knocking … kicking down the damn door, you might say.

When else in all of human history has there been a time when we were in better position to shape the future? Ecosystems are screaming for mercy and our land base is practically an endangered species. What we do (or don’t do) in the next few years could quite possibly tilt us all toward either the point of no return or a far more sane form of society. In other words, each and every one of us can take part – right now – in creating the most important social changes ever imagined. Here’s how:

1. How to Be a Good Organizer

a) Spend some time thinking about trees.
b) Imagine what clear cutting looks like, sounds like and feels like.
c) Remind yourself that 80 percent of the world’s forests are gone.
d) Be a good organizer.

2. How to Find Like-Minded Comrades Ready to Start Right Now

a) Go to the beach.
b) Smell the salty air and listen to the waves.
c) Remind yourself that 90 percent of the large fish in the ocean are gone.
d) Find like-minded comrades ready to start right now.

3. How to Plan a Protest That Does More Than March

a) Remind yourself that 200,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed each day. Picture a planet devoid of rainforests. Picture a human body without lungs.
b) Remind yourself that a woman is raped every 46 seconds in America. Visualize the terror and trauma of these experiences.
c) Remind yourself that 29,158 children under the age of five die from preventable causes each day. Imagine the feelings of grief, sorrow and loss.
d) Plan a protest that does more than march.

4. How to Give a Rousing Speech That Results in Immediate Direct Action

a) Find a quiet place.
b) Close your eyes and breathe deeply.
c) Think about animals in slaughterhouses and laboratories. Think about humans in prisons. Think about civilians in a war zone. Think about someone you love dying of cancer caused by corporate-created toxins.
d) Give a rousing speech that results in immediate direct action.

5. How to Bring Down the Dominant Culture

a) Ask yourself if you’re content with your relatively high quality of life being possible thanks to the poor quality of life of so many others elsewhere.
b) Ask yourself if you’re content with your relative freedom being possible thanks to the oppression of so many others elsewhere.
c) Accept that we are all accomplices to the perpetual global crime called “civilization.”
d) Bring down the dominant culture.

This isn’t about skin color, gender, or what parcel of geography you happen to have been born on. I’m not talking about party affiliations, incremental reform or what sky god you’ve chosen to worship. It’s all about recognizing a crisis and taking the appropriate measures.

We’re on the brink of economic, social and environmental collapse. What an extraordinary time to be alive. How lucky are we? We’ve been trusted with the most vital mission of all time: survival.

Katherine Ventura of the Huffington Post writes about Monday’s discussion between Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey and Ai Weiwei:

“Twitter is the people’s tool, the tool of the ordinary people, people who have no other resources,” Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei said at the Paley Center for Media in New York Monday night, after challenging Twitter founder Jack Dorseyto make Twitter’s web interface available in Chinese… Ai Weiwei pressed Dorsey for a commitment to open Twitter to Chinese language translators, saying: “I need a clear answer, yes or no.”

Dorsey, who was participating via screen from San Francisco, clearly felt the pressure, but cautioned that, while Twitter’s goal was “end to end translation in every language,” it would take time.

“The Chinese people think you are some kind of god,” Ai Weiwei told Dorsey. “You created a possibility for people in this very dark room to see a ray of light… to freely give their opinion.” If Twitter were to create a Chinese language interface, he suggested, Dorsey would become “one of the most important heroes in Chinese political development.”

Saying he spent a minimum of 8 hours a day on Twitter, Ai Weiwei said that Twitter was well suited to a language where each character is an entire word. “With 140 characters in Chinese you really can write a novel,” he quipped…Ai Weiwei described the disappointment Chinese activists felt during Barack Obama’s recent trip to China, not only about his avoidance of Human Rights issues, but also because he made a point of saying that he had never used Twitter. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, drew praise however, for her strong stance on Internet Freedom.

On CNN, Christiane Amanpour interviewed Ai Weiwei about Twitter and other social media in China:
Democracy Now! broadcasts from Park City, Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival, the nation’s largest festival for independent cinema. Today, we spend the hour with Robert Redford. He’s well known as an actor, but part and parcel of who he is is an activist. He took his success and leveraged it to promote his real passions: environmental justice, Native American rights and independent filmmaking. Since 1980, through the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Institute, Robert Redford has helped independent voices develop their craft—in film, theater and music—and reach new audiences. Redford joins us for a wide-ranging interview about these many roles in his life, on and off screen. [includes rush transcript]

This is my journey to create innovation at a local community level. The whole country is waking up and taking action and wants to take responsibility for their future. Right at this time there is a great opportunity, one to address the challenges that face us as we move toward sustainable futures and two the potential of SME’s to be part of future wealth creation.

See what my plan of action is for this year.

Advocate of Sustainability

I have been an advocate of sustainability since the 70’s with the core area of interest in energy effi cient building and systems. This year is to be part of the process of creating change in local communities of moving toward sustainable futures.

Sustainability Challenge

At the beginning of April I will publish the fourth About People newsletter and will run a workshop/conference Sustainability Challenge which will bring local business together for a two days. This will be an opportunity for local SME’s to look at how they implement sustainability into their business and to fi nd ways that will improve

business performance but will also improve the bottom line. There will be more details in February/March About People newsletter

Trek from Melbourne to Brisbane

Starting in end of April 2010 I am cycling from Melbourne to Brisbane. The objectives of this trek are to facilitate workshops in every city and town along the journey to gather and share information for the creation of sustainable communities.

These workshops will:

• Create a network of local resources that can be shared across the whole society.

• Create dynamic links between major population centres and rural country areas.

• Create trust that develops positive constructive dialogue which is solution focused.

• Develop strategies that work with local industries to develop sustainable businesses and industries.

• To be inclusive of all people who want to be involved in the process.

I will also be filming a documentary and gather stories about people I meet along the way to tell their story.

My focus is to facilitate changes that stick because people develop trust and are able to create their own sustainable future that is aligned with the values of the whole community and bring all interests to the table to create the best solutions to the problems that are facing all of us and move toward sustainable futures

The trek will run over 3 months

Sustainability Awards

I was also a judge on Pittwater’s sustainability awards and I am now looking into what interest there is by councils across Sydney having a city sustainability awards. This would involve individual councils running their own awards then having city wards following on from the individual council wards. This could follow into a state then a nationala wards.

The whole idea behind this is to engage local communities at the individual level, in sustainability in landscaping/ horticulture, building/built environment and business. This I believe would also speed up the process of integrating sustainability into the whole of society.

I understand that all councils plan well in advance and what I am proposing is working toward events happening in 2011 and 2012. I have already indicated I have had conversations with a number of councils across Sydney and beyond and they are City of Sydney, Pittwater, Warringah, North Sydney, Willoughby, Hornsby, Parramatta, Canada Bay, Hurstville, Sutherland, Blacktown, Wollongong, Newcastle City, Melbourne City, Brisbane City, ACT, Toowoomba, Warick, Lithgow, Tamworth, Armidale, Albury and Wodonga and Yarra Ranges Shire Council.

100% Renewable Campaign

I am also a member of Climate action Pittwater and CAP is organising their campaign for a 100% renewable which is part of the campaign being organised by Climate Actions Groups across the whole planet.

About People Newsletter

About People link to last newsletter http://www.aboutpeople.com.au/Pdf/ap_No02s.pdf positive, uplifting and solution focused stories.

Climate scientist James Hansen talks about global warming, Copenhagen, and his new book.

James Hansen, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, is one of the world’s most famous climatologists. He testified at a 1988 U.S. Senate hearing that the emission of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels was already producing a greenhouse effect, and during the administration of George W. Bush, political appointees tried to keep him from speaking out about global warming. Hansen, 68, has become increasingly convinced that a climate crisis is upon us, warning this summer that the climate system is racing toward “tipping points” which, if passed, would lead to irreversible and catastrophic effects. On the eve of the publication of his first book, Storms of My Grandchildren, which he finished while recovering from treatment for prostate cancer and which will be published in December, he spoke to me by phone. Excerpts:

How serious a setback would it be if no agreement on a climate treaty is reached in Copenhagen, where 192 countries are meeting starting Dec. 7?
It’s not a setback at all if it allows a careful reassessment of what is needed. The cap-and-trade scheme [that the Copenhagen negotiations were working toward] is just not going to be effective at controlling greenhouse emissions. Political leaders have to realize that the fundamental problem is that fossil fuels are the cheapest form of energy, so they will continue to be burned unless we put a gradually increasing price on carbon emissions [through a carbon tax]. That’s a much better approach than national goals for emissions reductions, which will probably not be met.

Policymakers who deny the threat of climate change cite the research of Richard Lindzen of MIT and other scientists, who question the link between carbon dioxide and global warming—as the last head of NASA, Michael Griffin, also did. As long as there remains this scientific dispute, why should policy makers act?
These contrarians are not having much effect. None of the major countries are denying the problem anymore, though in the U.S. these contrarians are still widely heard, and when it comes to passing a bill in Congress they may still be an obstacle.

In the 1980s scientists worried about a doubling of pre-industrial levels of carbon dioxide, to 550 parts per million. Then 450 started to look like a problem. Now you and others say that 350 is dangerous, and we’re already at 387. What did climatologists learn that caused them to lower the estimate of dangerous CO2 levels?
The new information came from observations of how the system is responding to 387ppm and to more detailed information on how earth responded in the past to different atmospheric compositions. For instance, we see that the ice sheets are not stable at 387ppm; the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass even with current warming. The Greenland ice sheet had been losing between 150 and 200 cubic kilometers a year in 2002, and now is losing almost 300 cubic kilometers a year. Antarctica had been losing less than 100 cubic kilometers a year, and is now losing more than 150, so it seems like we’re heading into a period of much more rapid ice sheet loss. Also, in the arctic we’ve lost 40 percent of the sea ice in the warm season, and that will soon be 100 percent. Mountain glaciers are retreating rapidly and could be gone in 50 years. These are not model results but observations: 387ppm is already too high, and 450ppm will be far worse.

In Storms of My Grandchildren , you describe climate tipping points. What are some and why are they so dangerous?
Things like methane hydrates on the continental shelf and the tundra: as they warm up they release their methane [which is a greenhouse gas], which we’re already seeing in the tundra and elsewhere. Tipping points are so dangerous because if you pass them, the climate is out of humanity’s control: if an ice sheet disintegrates and starts to slide into the ocean there’s nothing we can do about that.

What caused you to move beyond research and become an outspoken advocate for addressing climate change?
The realization that there was a gap between what had become clear scientifically and what policymakers knew. Then, when I wrote papers and gave talks on climate change, it became clear that the political system just didn’t want to react to this. Scientists have to help politicians connect the dots.

George F. Will has argued that reducing U.S. carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050 would leave us with per capita emissions we last had in the 1800s, implying we’d be back to a horse-and-buggy, pre-electricity era. Is he right?
Not at all. We don’t have to decrease our energy use, we just have to decrease our carbon emissions. That’s why you want to increase the price of carbon, so let other technologies take over, like energy efficiency and renewables. We’ll be moving into a better world, not a worse one, not to a horse-and-buggy world but to one with cleaner air and water once we stop burning coal.

You are critical of the Kyoto climate treaty. Why?
Because it allows carbon offsets and uses cap-and-trade. Emissions from oil, gas, and coal have actually increased under Kyoto. If we just set goals for emissions reductions and allow people to miss them and to use offsets, we’re not going to stabilize and reduce greenhouse emissions at the rate needed.

Do we still have time to avert climate calamity, and if so what would it take?
We do, but just barely. If we phase out coal linearly by 2030, CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere will peak at 400 to 425 ppm, which is low enough that it allows you to get back to 350, especially if there is extensive reforestation of degraded areas. So a fundamental requirement is to phase out the use of coal in 20 years, which means you have to start now and not build any more coal-burning power plants: these have a lifetime of decades, and once they’re built utilities don’t want to retire them before their lifetime is up.

You write that energy efficiency and renewables won’t be enough to meet the energy needs of China and India in the next few decades. So what do we do?
They will require nuclear power for electricity. They are both moving in that direction, and we really should help them. They have such polluted air and water that they’d love to get off dirty fuels like coal. Of course, you also want to do energy efficiency and renewables, but I think India and China will turn more toward nuclear. I think the prospects for that are quite good, but we have to get going now.

What do you think of the climate bills now before Congress?
They’re disasters. We can’t allow the polluters to write the bill, but that’s what happened. What’s needed is putting a price on carbon, not cap-and-trade.

What do you think of Obama’s performance on this issue so far?
A lot of individual things have been good, like using EPA to apply pressure for improved vehicle mileage, but I’m disappointed that he hasn’t taken a leadership role. He’s let the politicians in Washington come up with these bills rather than offering them some guidance. Climate change is analogous to Lincoln and slavery or Churchill and Nazism: it’s not the kind of thing where you can compromise. He needs to have some understanding of this [climate] problem himself, and not just listen to his advisers.

Are policies like Cash for Clunkers, or “cash for caulkers” [home weatherizing], or green jobs initiatives useful or just more greenwashing?
They’re useful but costly. What you want to do is address [climate change] in the most cost-effective way possible, which is to put a price on carbon. For example, there’s a program to let people fold the cost of improving the energy of their home or of adding clean energy [by installing solar panels or other forms of renewable energy] into their monthly mortgage payment. You decrease your monthly energy costs by more than the amount that gets added to your mortgage, since you’re averaging the cost over several years. This works best if you have a rising price on carbon.

You write about the need to take to the streets and engage in civil resistance. Such as? Anything that draws attention to the fundamental problem. We just had this example of the student in Utah who upset the Bureau of Land Management by bidding on oil and gas leases, without even intending to pay for them, in order to stop energy companies from acquiring them and drilling on public lands.

You make it sound like now that you’ve written the book, you’re going to go hole up in your lab. Really?
I wish I could. But when I started to speak out about climate change in 2004, after 15 years of avoiding it, I saw that the problem is not going to be solved easily. I’m afraid this is going to continue.

Oxfam members wearing masks of world leaders offer a Copenhagen menu to other members representing poor countries last month in Barcelona. Photograph: Lluis Gene/AFP/Getty Images

Never mind the boring old delegates at next month’s climate talks in Copenhagen. Nearby at the “alternative people’s summit” Klimaforum09 and at events and actions around the city, the largest ever gathering of climate activists will take place which aims to create a global network that will take the environment movement forward for the next year and beyond.

“We’re expecting more than 10,000 people a day,” says Richard Steed, one of the organisers of Klimaforum09, which has been funded by the Danish government. “This is about creating a people’s network which will carry on communicating and working together long after the conference is finished. I don’t think Klimaforum is about smashing the state, but we don’t want to see business as usual any more, that isn’t going to solve anything. We’re looking at radical solutions.”

Naomi Klein, George Monbiot and Vandana Shiva have all committed to speak during the two weeks of meetings and workshops on subjects like climate justice, transition towns, capitalism, ecological debt. Groups including Friends of the Earth, Campaign against Climate Change, and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance all piling in.

What’s on
Apart from meetings and more meetings, what else is happening during the climate talks? Well, Friends of the Earth International is organising the Flood on Saturday 12 December: this will be a good old traditional march starting at the Klimaforum and ending in Christiansborg Slotsplads, the big square in front of the Danish parliament.

Two less formal actions are being organized by Climate Justice Action (CJA), the umbrella group for an international network that includes Climate Camp, Focus on the Global South, and the Indian Social Action Forum, among others. On Sunday 13 December the Hit the Production action will attempt to shut down Copenhagen harbour. And on 16 December, CJA will lead an attempt to take over the conference and turn it into a People’s Summit for Climate Justice.

There will also be assorted actions organised by independent groups taking place all over Copenhagen. Never Trust a COP are calling for “social war”, and on 11 December a group called Not Your Business will be protesting against the corporations who are taking part in the COP15 process. It’s going to be the sort of fortnight where everywhere you look people are chained to railings with slogans written on their faces.

Where to stay
There’s a frantic scramble for accommodation, and many hotels and hostels are now fairly booked up, although there are still some places available through the NHG website. But a website called New Life Copenhagen is pairing up visitors with private hosts (they’ve so far found beds for over 3,000 people), and the Climate Collective is trying to set up as much accommodation as possible.

The Climate Collective are also negotiating for the use of some public halls, but this is still in discussion. They’re setting up a soup kitchen (“for 20,000 people” squeaked one Danish activist over the phone – she sounded a little bit stressed) and looking into organising other food points. This too is still in development.

How to travel
And if you haven’t booked your coach/train/boat/plane yet then you should probably get on with it. Climate Camp has made it easy for activist by booking coaches which will pick up from Leeds and London.

Eurolines Coaches go to Copenhagen, or you can get a ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg with DFDS Seaways and then travel by train (DSB is the state railway) to Copenhagen. You can take the Eurostar to Brussels and then travel on by overnight sleeper train, or you can fly with Easyjet, British Airways, Scandinavian Airlines (“Europe’s most punctual airline”) and a few others.

If you do fly, reader Steve Glass recommends avoiding expensive taxis and airport transfers by taking the local bus from the airport to the Bella Centre, where the climate conference is based (he says “Get on the 5A outside the airport and change to the 4A at Syndbyvester Plads. The minimum charge is 21.5 kroner, about £2.60″).

Alternatively, try to win tickets to Copenhagen through competitions such as the one running on the World Climate Community site. Or, of course, you could take a truly radical approach and walk or cycle.

What you should know before you go

Climate Justice Action has a thorough list of how you should prepare before you leave for on its protester guide to Copenhagen, including medics and trauma support, your legal rights and freedom to travel through Europe under the Schengen agreement.

Thousands of activists from all over the world will soon descend on Copenhagen with one message: that world leaders must agree a deal that will be effective in reducing global emissions, and be fair for the people most vulnerable to climate change.

Hundreds of mainstream NGOs, such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, will represent “unheard voices”, and attempt to influence the negotiators inside the convention centre. Outside, many more will champion those voices that are not always heard at such major international talks.

Even politicians recognise the importance of people power. Ed Miliband, the energy and climate change secretary, last year said that “popular mobilisation” was vital in getting politicians to act on climate change. More recently, the former US vice-president Al Gore said that “civil disodedience” has its place in politics.

Here’s our calendar of major actions during the conference. If there are any more you want others to know about, please add them in the comments below.

5 December

The Wave is London’s last call for climate action before the talks begin in Copenhagen. Organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, which includes Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, ActionAid and a host of other campaign groups, it aims to attract tens of thousands of people to parade through London to “demonstrate their support for a safe climate future for all”. It will start at midday in Grosvenor Square and circle the Houses of Parliament with an after-party starting at 4.30pm at LSE.

12 December

Friends of the Earth International’s Flood for Climate Justice aims to “flood” the streets of Copenhagen with people calling for a good deal for the developing world.

Climate Justice Action, a coalition that includes Climate Camp, will be attempting to close Copenhagen harbour for the day to highlight the contribution of trade and travel in man-made global warming, and to call for the inclusion of shipping emissions in a deal at Copenhagen.

System Change, Not Climate Change is the slogan for the broad coalition of environmental activists, human rights campaigners and trade unionists brought together by Climate Justice Action, Climate Justice Now! and the Danish-based Climate Collective (Klimakollektivet). It will start in front of the Danish parliament at 1pm and end at the Bella Centre. Mobile stages will follow the parade to entertain the crowds for the 1-2 hour walk.

Global day of Action run by the Global Climate Campaign will see actions in 104 countries simultaneously. A march through Copenhagen is planned from the city centre to the Bella Centre where the conference is taking place at 1.30pm.

La Via Campesina is launching an action against the meat industry, possibly targeting a pig farm somewhere in Denmark, which is the world’s largest exporter of bacon.

14 December

No Borders Action! No Climate Refugees!

Campaigners highlight the impact of climate change and the displacement of people because of drought and natural disasters.

15 December

Resistance is Ripe! Agriculture Action Day is supported by A SEED Europe, La Via Campesina and Reclaim the Fields, among others, and is calling for sustainable farming and land rights.

Angry Mermaid award for the company or lobby group that is “doing the most to sabotage effective action on climate change.”

16 December

Reclaim Power! Pushing for Climate Justice:

Negotiations and actions will intensify as ministers and heads of state arrive in the Danish capital to clinch a deal, or at least agree terms of a deal that will be signed next year.

Bike Bloc promises to put (see the video above) with a mass bike action at the Bella Centre on 16 December that will end with the Peoples’ Assembly for Climate Justice, organised by Climate Justice Action and Climate Justice Now. You can help with designing the “device of mass transportation and pedal powered resistance machine” from 5 December at the Candy Factory in Copenhagen
