An uplifting story of commitment from a fellow Australian I admire

Ian Cleland – Citizen of Earth. Is the Walking Man!

The Greenhouse Neutral Foundation is not about talk without action. Ian Cleland is not about talk without action; he is an inspiration to everyone that action can and will be the change we need to see in the world.

Ian; from me and the Foundation I commend you as a fellow traveller on the road of life.

Bob Williamson Founder and Chair.

This is my journey to create innovation at a local community level. The whole country is waking up and taking action and wants to take responsibility for their future. Right at this time there is a great opportunity, one to address the challenges that face us as we move toward sustainable futures and two the potential of SME’s to be part of future wealth creation.

See what my plan of action is for this year.

Advocate of Sustainability

I have been an advocate of sustainability since the 70’s with the core area of interest in energy effi cient building and systems. This year is to be part of the process of creating change in local communities of moving toward sustainable futures.

Sustainability Challenge

At the beginning of April I will publish the fourth About People newsletter and will run a workshop/conference Sustainability Challenge which will bring local business together for a two days. This will be an opportunity for local SME’s to look at how they implement sustainability into their business and to fi nd ways that will improve

business performance but will also improve the bottom line. There will be more details in February/March About People newsletter

Trek from Melbourne to Brisbane

Starting in end of April 2010 I am cycling from Melbourne to Brisbane. The objectives of this trek are to facilitate workshops in every city and town along the journey to gather and share information for the creation of sustainable communities.

These workshops will:

• Create a network of local resources that can be shared across the whole society.

• Create dynamic links between major population centres and rural country areas.

• Create trust that develops positive constructive dialogue which is solution focused.

• Develop strategies that work with local industries to develop sustainable businesses and industries.

• To be inclusive of all people who want to be involved in the process.

I will also be filming a documentary and gather stories about people I meet along the way to tell their story.

My focus is to facilitate changes that stick because people develop trust and are able to create their own sustainable future that is aligned with the values of the whole community and bring all interests to the table to create the best solutions to the problems that are facing all of us and move toward sustainable futures

The trek will run over 3 months

Sustainability Awards

I was also a judge on Pittwater’s sustainability awards and I am now looking into what interest there is by councils across Sydney having a city sustainability awards. This would involve individual councils running their own awards then having city wards following on from the individual council wards. This could follow into a state then a nationala wards.

austbntp2The whole idea behind this is to engage local communities at the individual level, in sustainability in landscaping/ horticulture, building/built environment and business. This I believe would also speed up the process of integrating sustainability into the whole of society.

I understand that all councils plan well in advance and what I am proposing is working toward events happening in 2011 and 2012. I have already indicated I have had conversations with a number of councils across Sydney and beyond and they are City of Sydney, Pittwater, Warringah, North Sydney, Willoughby, Hornsby, Parramatta, Canada Bay, Hurstville, Sutherland, Blacktown, Wollongong, Newcastle City, Melbourne City, Brisbane City, ACT, Toowoomba, Warick, Lithgow, Tamworth, Armidale, Albury and Wodonga and Yarra Ranges Shire Council.

I am also a member of Climate action Pittwater and CAP is organising their campaign for a 100% renewable which is part of the campaign being organised by Climate Actions Groups across the whole planet.

austbntp4People have asked do you think you are doing to much, I say no, and there is no time to waste. We have to act now.
